How To Play Hammer On's And Pull Off's Hammer-on’s are a great addition to add life to your chords, however there is a complimentary technique that pairs perfectly with it: The pull-off. The pull-off is a technique transition to a lower note much in the same way you transition to a higher note with the hammer-on. Example 1 demonstrates a D chord. The 4th finger pulls off of the 1st string by a downward motion. This plucks the string to give the note behind it more definition and volume – in this case the 2nd finger. Example 2 demonstrates a hammer-on/pull-off combination, which is very common. The 4th finger quickly hammers on the 1st string and immediately pulls off to the 2nd finger. I then lift the 2nd finger for a Dsus2 chord. I hammer on with the 2nd finger and Experiment with this technique using all the chords you know. It will also help to strengthen your fingers, especially if you use your 4th finger for this. Ex.1 E |--3-p-2----| Ex.2 E |--2h3p2--------0h2p0--------|
