A Windows Tablet That Could Beat the iPad
Microsoft made a huge splash this week, first with its announcement of the Surface tablet on Monday, then with a barrage of details about the upcoming Windows Phone 8. The Surface news was remarkable on many fronts. What particularly struck me, however, was this: In all my years of covering the company, this was the first time I heard details of an upcoming product from Microsoft and thought, "Wow, I need to have that right now." I admire many Microsoft products and use them every day. But they dont usually evoke real techno-lust--the kind of visceral response that Apple fans so often report. Of course, the Surface tablet, running Windows RT, isnt available yet; nor is the Windows 8-based Pro version (the one I truly covet). But if the final product can come close to delivering on its promise, Microsoft is going to sell bunches of them.
