It's been 36 years since "Negro History Week" was expanded to Black History Month, but the spirit of Carter G. Woodson's original idea in 1926 to formally recognize the considerable and then-underappreciated achievements of black men and women in America remains unchanged. Today we join the annual month-long celebration.

Origins of Black History Month
