Wednesday, January 18, 2012, was the day the Web (or at least some portion of it) went dark. That's when the U.S. versions of Wikipedia, Craigslist, and a number of other sites intentionally blacked out their content to protest two twin anti-piracy bills now wending their way through Congress. Dubbed SOPA and PIPA, both pieces of legislation have drawn their share of media attention, not to mention heated rhetoric from folks on both sides of the issue. If you're not 100 percent clear on the details of the twin bills--including who's for them, who's opposed, and why--make sure to read Jared Newman's clear-headed explanation, "SOPA and PIPA: Just the Facts." Then feel free to join the freewheeling conversation in the user comments section at the end of the article. Warning: It can get pretty heated there. But that's what an uncensored Internet is all about.
