A few years back I bought a fancy-pants DSLR camera because I was tired of taking poor-quality pictures with my phone. The theory was good; in practice, things didnt work out as I'd hoped. Though the camera itself was terrific, the photographer (yours truly) was not. You see, I didnt bother to learn the ins and outs of the camera. I mostly set it to Auto Mode and clicked. The results were uninspiring. Eventually I taught myself a few tricks and learned about the camera's settings, but not before I'd taken far too many substandard photos. Perhaps if I had been able to read Dave Johnson's quick tutorial, "Using Your Camera's Settings: Program Mode, Shutter Speed, and More," the pictures from my daughter's preschool graduation wouldn't look like they'd been shot inside an oil drum. But you can learn from my mistakes and read Dave's article. It will be time well spent.
