| What Is A Pull Off? You've learned how to sound less mechanical when transitioning to a higher note ... ... how can you inject this same idea going to a lower note? This lesson is going to focus on how to do that. To transition to a lower note on the fingerboard you need to use a technique called a "Pull-off". This is exactly the opposite of the "Hammer-on" you learned in Lesson 1. In the first example, you're going to place your 3rd finger on the 3rd string at the 9th fret. You're ALSO going to place your 1st finger on the 3rd string at the 7th fret. In example 1, you're striking the 3rd string sounding the note at the 9th fret and release your 3rd finger in a downward motion pulling slightly toward your 1st finger. Example 2 demonstrates an exercise designed to strengthen each finger utilizing the "Pull-off" technique. Example 3 demonstrates a combination of Hammer-on and Pull-off techniques that are used quite often when playing solos. Start slowly while getting used to the mechanics of moving in both directions. Gradually, quicken the tempo while keeping your tone, volume and rhythm consistent.
