Do You Make These Mistakes On Guitar?

Do You Make These Mistakes On Guitar?

Click here to learn moreHey Bharath,

Out of all th e guitar players that I've come across over the years, I've noticed one simple thing that seems to separate the good players from the not-so-good players.

No, it isn't bone-headed perseverance or sheer talent, though those can play a role too =). Nope, I'm talking about theory... Guitar theory.

Guitar theory (well, music theory as it relates to the guitar) explains why and how everything happens on the guitar. When you understand basic theory, you'll see the guitar from a totally different perspective.

Put your guitar down for half a second, and let me put it to you differently .

Let's say your car broke down, and you need help. You find a mechanic, and the guy has a great set of tools. Nice, expensive, shiny tools. You're chatting with him about cars, and you quickly realize he has no IDEA how an engine works. Are you going to let him work on your car? Not likely! That's because you know that good tools don't make a good mechanic - knowledge does. In the same way, licks and riffs don't make a good guitar player - knowledge does!

When you've got the knowledge (guitar theory), THEN you can add extra tools (riffs, scales, etc) to really increase your ability as a musician. As they say, "a good workman never blames his tools" because everyone knows that if he's truly worth his salt, he'll find a way to get it done, even if he's only got a hammer and a crescent wrench!

That's because he fundamentally understands his trade... On the guitar, there is one particular bit of theory that is so fundamental, that it governs nearly everything else that happens on the guitar.

It's called I IV V. (That's one, four, and five in English).

I IV V is the first theory that any guitar player should learn, because it explains what chords belong in each key, how they relate to each other, and even how the scales work! "But... but THEORY IS BORING!" I can hear you saying already... Not so! Bad teachers are boring! There, I said it!

Theory is only boring if it is taught in abstract (having no relation to yo ur guitar and how you play it). Make it relevant, and it becomes fun! I'll teach you how to figure out songs on your own...how to jam with your friends... How to learn songs faster than you've ever done before. All with theory!

"I have reviewed the video... I have taken officially guitar lessons seven times... but they never took... I learned more from your video instruction than I learned in those lessons. I will review it repeatedly until I can apply these things to the fretboard. Well done, well done."

And that's just what one person has said about this lesson. Dozens more have said the same thing. Understanding I IV V will have you:

  • Strumming along with any so ng on the radio in 5 minutes (you'll be able to quickly figure them out on your own)

  • Easily jamming with friends

  • Learning new songs quicker than you ever did before

At OneFourFive.com there's a short introduction course to I IV V, which you can get for free.
