Guitar Lesson - Changing Your Tone To Suit What You Play

Changing Your Tone To Suit What You Play

Hey Bharath,

When you're playing in a band you're going to be changing your tone from song to song. You might even be changing your tone a couple times during one song! In this lesson, I'm going to share with you what I like to do to my tone regarding rhythm playing and soloing.

First, I want to tell you the gear I'm using.

Guitar: Minarik Lotus Studio Xtreme

Amplifier: Fender Blues Junior

Effects: Maxon AD999 Pro Analog Delay, Maxon OD9 Plus Pro, DDyna Charlie Special Overdrive and a Guyatone MCm5 Mighty Micro Chorus

Generally, I'm playing through either the Charlie Special or the OD9 Plus Pro for my overdrive sound. For rhythm playing I'm using the Chorus if my sound stay clean.

For soloing, I'll use more repeats from the analog delay and for rhythm work I'll keep the repeats turned down. That's right, I use delay for rhythm playing also.

The Minarik Lotus uses a standard Les Paul configuration in the way of 2 humbucking pickups and a 3-way toggle switch.

By using the neck pickup for rhythm work and the bridge pickup for soloing. I'll also use a combination of both depending on the sound I want.

For dramatic effect I quickly flip to the bridge pickup while the chords stop and keep the pickup and overdrive engaged as I play the remainder of the solo.

What I always do these days is use the Maxon AD999 Pro. This is an analog delay unit that has the option of utilizing multitap delays that have the ability to overlap each other with different rhythms. This places a natural space on my sound without my notes getting blurred by a reverb setting.

To my ears, the advantage of using a multitap delay rather than reverb makes my phrases more articulate and clear.

The AD999 pro will stay on at all times replacing the reverb on my amp. If needed, I'll stack a delay on top for a more pronounced delay effect when playing live.
