About Today: It's Time to Winterize

About.com

I live in an apartment and don't own a car, so my winterizing checklist begins and ends with a phone call to my landlord to turn the heat on. Unfortunately, it's not quite that easy for everybody.

Get Your Household In Order
Get these things done now because, as our Guide to Home Repair astutely points out, installing storm windows when it's 10 degrees outside isn't exactly a fun-filled holiday activity.

Prep Your Car for Winter
Old Man Winter may chuckle as he watches you scrape sheets of ice off your car windshield, but he bellows with laughter when you break down on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere because you forgot to check your antifreeze.

Don't Forget Your Lawn
What exactly does "putting your lawn to bed" for the winter entail? It could include re-seeding, mulching and raking leaves, and tending to sprinkler systems.

Set Up a Home Workout Space
Treacherous roads and heavy snowfall could make long walks or driving to the gym difficult for those living in cold-weather locales. Sorry, no excuses: our Guide to Pilates has your winter fitness solution.

Are Your Tires Safe?
Towing a TrailerIt's important to check your truck's tires every month, even if they're brand new. Regular inspections point out unusual wear issues, and can help you avoid a problem before it becomes necessary to buy new tires. Watch out for several common signals your tires try to send.

Tire Choices for Winter Driving
Snow tires, studs, chains... Use these tips to help decide what type of tire configuration will work best for your winter driving needs.

Buying a Used Truck? Check These Systems First
I've talked with hundreds of truck owners over the years, enough to have a pretty good feel for what they did and did not check out before they bought a used truck. Most drivers inspected the typical systems, but there are other factors that nearly everyone forgets to consider.

GM's Brake Line Corrosion Issue
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's investigation into possible brake line corrosion problems in about 6-million GM vehicles is attracting attention. As of this morning, 447 people had responded to our blog post about the issue, and the majority have shared stories of corrosion found in their trucks.

Suzuki GSX1250FA Review: A Bandit By Any Other Name
How quickly we forget what we crave. A while back, I asked if Suzuki's GSX1250FA should be imported to the US, and a chorus of replies suggested that Suzuki would be remiss if they didn't bring in this fully-faired version of the Bandit 1250. But now that we've had the GSX1250FA available stateside, it seems to have slipped under the radar... read more
